Winter
Prevention Tips: The
following tips could help you prevent a loss (and a
deductible). The tips change seasonally to
coincide with the most appropriate timing to prevent the
loss.
• Supplemental
heating is a major source of
losses. Depending on the type, check your unit
for proper installation, clearances, chimney or
exhaust cleaning, and proper storage of the unit's
fuel. Store ashes in closed non-combustible
containers. Ensure there are working fire
extinguishers nearby.
• Tires are key to winter
driving. Check tread depth.
Also, softer compound rubber makes a big
difference on winter specific tires.
• Bridges and overpasses freeze first
and are
usually the first accidents in a storm. Also, snow
has different traction characteristics at different
temperatures. Generally, the warmer the air
temperature the more slippery the snow surface is.
